Sleep Apnea Treatment and Sinus Augmentation Solutions

At Nickles Dental Oral Surgery and Family Dentistry, we understand the critical impact that sleep apnea can have on your overall health and quality of life. Our specialized dental treatments are designed to effectively address sleep apnea and snoring, providing you with the restful nights you deserve. Sleep apnea, a condition characterized by repeated breathing interruptions during sleep, can lead to dangerous oxygen deprivation and a host of related health issues.

What is sleep apnea? Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. It causes a lack of oxygen during the night, which can be dangerous.

There are many symptoms of sleep apnea that should be addressed:

  • Loud snoring
  • Gasping for air during sleep
  • Interrupted sleep
  • Extreme daytime sleepiness
  • Pauses in breathing
  • Shortness of breath upon waking
  • Dry mouth or sore throat in the morning
  • Chest pain when waking
  • Morning headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mood changes
  • Insomnia
  • High blood pressure

Don't let sleep apnea compromise your health and well-being. Contact Nickles Dental to explore effective treatment options that can transform your sleep quality and overall health.

Causes and Risk Factors

Identifying sleep apnea early is crucial for effective treatment. Nickles Dental is here to help you recognize the risks and take action.

Be aware of these common indicators, as they put you at higher risk for sleep apnea:

  • You are male
  • You are menopausal or post-menopausal
  • You are overweight or obese
  • You have a large neck or a narrow airway
  • You have high blood pressure or diabetes
  • You experience frequent nasal congestion
  • You are between the ages of 18 and 60
  • You have a family history of sleep apnea
  • You drink alcohol or smoke

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's time to consult with the experts at Nickles Dental. Our team can provide a thorough evaluation and develop a personalized treatment plan to address your sleep apnea concerns.

Why Treatment is Important: How We Can Help

Addressing sleep apnea is essential for your overall health and well-being. Nickles Dental understands the far-reaching impacts of untreated sleep apnea and is committed to helping you mitigate these risks.

Here's why seeking treatment is crucial:

  • Improves overall health and sleep quality
  • Helps your partner sleep better
  • Reduces risk of:
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Acid reflux
  • Diabetes

We have a trusted process to improve your sleep quality. We can fit a custom nightguard to keep your airway open during sleep. A nightguard is a comfortable alternative to the CPAP machine and allows for easier travel and use.

Here is our process for fitting the nightguard:

  • An impression of your mouth is taken
  • Sent to a lab for custom fabrication
  • Fit is checked and adjusted during your appointment

Patient Responsibility:

  • Wear the nightguard every night
  • Clean and store it properly
  • Follow the provided care instructions

Don't let sleep apnea compromise your health any longer. Reach out to Nickles Dental to explore effective treatment options that can significantly improve your sleep quality and overall health.

Sinus Augmentation: What is it and How Can I Benefit?

A sinus augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases bone volume in the upper jaw near the molars. During the procedure, bone is added to the maxillary sinuses and jaw to create a stable foundation for dental implants. The sinus membrane is carefully lifted to make room for the bone graft, which can be made from synthetic materials or naturally occurring sources.

Sinus augmentation is needed when dental implants are required, but there is insufficient bone volume. Its purpose is to restore jawbone density lost due to missing teeth and to prevent facial sagging.

Here is our procedure overview:

  • Performed under sedation by Dr. Daniel Nickles
  • X-rays and CT scans are used to assess jaw and sinus anatomy
  • An incision is made in the gums to access the bone
  • A window is created in the bone to lift the sinus membrane
  • Bone graft material is placed in the space beneath the lifted membrane
  • Gums are stitched closed after the graft is placed
  • Healing and integration of the graft with natural bone takes approximately 6 months

Aftercare instructions:

  • Avoid touching the surgical site with your tongue or fingers
  • Do not use straws for several days to prevent clot dislodgement
  • Apply ice packs to reduce swelling
  • Use gauze pads to control bleeding; change regularly
  • Avoid vigorous rinsing of the mouth
  • Do not blow your nose; sneeze with your mouth open if needed
  • Take all prescribed medications as directed
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking to promote faster healing
